Autism Assessments for Children, Adolescents and Adults

Understanding Autism Assessments

A psychological assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can provide a structured understanding of an individual's strengths, challenges, communication style, sensory experiences and day-to-day functioning.

At Therapy with Michaela, autism assessments are available for children (3 years +), adolescents and adults. Assessments follow current Australian guidelines and involve gathering information from multiple sources to build a comprehensive understanding of each person's presentation.

Assessments are conducted from our Hampton rooms and may also include childcare/school visits and telehealth components when appropriate.

Who is an Autism (ASD) Assessment for?

an Autism Assessment may be helpful if:

Children expreince

  • Difficulties with social interaction

  • Differences in communication style

  • Sensory sensitivities

  • Repetitive interests or behaviours that stop them from interacting with others or attend to other tasks

  • Challenges with change and transitions

Adolescents experience

  • Ongoing social difficulties

  • Feelings of being different from peers

  • Feeling of not belonging and not understanding peers

  • Sensory overwhelm

  • Difficulties with emotional regulation

  • Increased challenges during secondary school

Adults experience

  • Long-standing feelings of not fitting in

  • Difficulties understanding social expectations

  • Sensory sensitivities

  • Exhaustion from masking or pretenting to fit in

The Assessment process

Step 1: Initial Consultation

We complete an initial consultation before the assessment begins.

During this session, we discuss:

  • Your concerns and goals

  • Relevant background information

  • Previous assessments or diagnoses

  • Whether an autism assessment is appropriate

  • Whether another assessment may also be needed (e.g. cognitive assessment)

  • Estimated fees and timeframes

Step 2: Information Gathering

Assessment information may include:

  • Developmental history

  • Clinical interviews

  • Parent or caregiver interviews

  • School information (where relevant)

  • Behavioural observations

  • Questionnaires and rating scales

Step 3: Assessment Sessions

Several sessions may be needed, depending on the assessment's complexity.

Assessment sessions are completed in person and may involve a combination of:

  • Structured interviews

  • Standardised assessment tools

  • Behavioural observations

  • Cognitive and adaptive functioning measures where appropriate

Step 4: Report Preparation

A comprehensive report is prepared following the assessment.

The report may include:

  • Background information

  • Summary of assessment findings

  • Interpretation of results

  • Recommendations

  • Support considerations

  • Information relevant for schools, workplaces or other professionals where appropriate

Step 5: Feedback Session

A feedback session is provided to discuss:

  • Assessment findings

  • Questions about the report

  • Recommended next steps

  • Available supports and services

Important Information about Diagnosis

An assessment does not automatically result in a diagnosis.

For some individuals, additional information may be required and collaboration with other professionals may be recommended.

Where appropriate, multidisciplinary involvement may be necessary before a formal diagnosis can be confirmed.
