Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is often a medium to long-term treatment option and requires the therapist to have in-depth training in one of the psychotherapeutic modalities.

Michaela is trained in the Psychodynamic and Existential (Daseinsanalytical) approaches. She has also completed the Gottman’s Method Couples Therapy training.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is based on the work of Sigmund Freud, an Austrian neurologist. It helps to explore and understand one’s (un)conscious processes. This allows one to change the behaviours, motivations and feelings that may have created difficulties in their life.

Existential psychotherapy originates from the existential tradition of European philosophy, where the aim was to make sense of human existence. The Daseinsanalytical approach developed from the collaboration of the German philosopher Martin Heidegger and the Swiss psychiatrist Medard Boss, who explored the meaning of “being”. This therapeutic process involves a philosophical exploration, in order to understand how the person subjectively experiences something, as the existential therapists avoid models that categorise or label people.
